History
The
Mojave Road is a 138-mile trail that once brought wagon trains to California.
The journey is a 2 to 3 day
4-wheel
drive adventure that will begin at 500’ in elevation and reach altitudes
up to 5,167 feet. Unlike the early settlers, the
Mojave
Road 2001 crew has utilized topographic maps and GPS technology to
navigate their course and designate way-points.
Cellular
telephones and amateur radio operators will be utilized to plot their progress.
Waypoints
To make
it easier to follow along with Dennis Casebier’ Mojave Road Guide we decided
to name the waypoints
similarly
to the mile markers. The waypoints are written in this format because
most GPS’ will not accept
decimal
points in the waypoint name.
The waypoints
were found by correlating landmarks, roads and trails found both in the
text as well as on the
topo maps.
Not every
mile marker has been given a waypoint, only ones that the text suggests
might be tricky or represent
a change
in direction. A few waypoints are also located at major intersections.
As we all
know trails and washes can shift directions over time. These waypoints
should only be used in
conjunction
with the text.
Waypoints that could not be confirmed by measuring three known points have been labeled as “Best Guess”.
Waypoint
“16-8” is the first point on the list. This is the eastern most boundary
on the computerized topo map
system
that we are using.
On occasion,
most notably between waypoints (“73-8” & “85-2”), (“95-5” & “102-3”),
and (“106-7 & 114-6”) the
Mojave
Road is not found on the topo map.
Waypoint
“121-4” (at Afton Canyon Campground) is the last point on the list.
From here the text has you
following
the Mojave River bottom. At this point, we were unable to find at
least two known landmarks to fix
more waypoints.
Under no
circumstances should these waypoints be used as your sole guide for the
Mojave Road. These
waypoints
as of yet have not been verified. If you use this material you are
doing so at your own risk.

Note:
The waypoints were found by correlating
landmarks, roads and trails found both in the text as well as on the
topo maps and thus are not to be used as accurate and confirmed waypoints.
Under no circumstances should these

Waypoints were however made while traveling the road and will be added later.

1 Jeep Cherokee (Vince & Kim)
1 Jeep Cherokee ( Dick & Leona)
1 Jeep Wrangler ( Dennis)
1 Suzuki SideKick (Bill & Holly)
At 0915 on Sat. 2/17 Holly (KE6WEB) reported
that Mojave Road 01 crew has started at the
Colorado River (mile marker 0.0) and are heading
toward waypoint 16.8
At 1300 on Sat. 2/17Bill (KD6HFY) reported that
they are having lunch at waypont 33.4. All is
well and cellular service is good.
Thanks to Jay Fleming for sending the following
e-mail Saturday evening: I received a call on
147.30 at 19:30 hours from KD6HFY requesting I
advise you that he was at waypoint 50.0. He
advised they made camp at 1545 hours, and all
is well.
Dennis called from the cellular phone Sun. 2/18
at 1045 hours and reported that they were at
mile marker 62.1. Only problem so far was that
Dick lost his glasses and found them only after
running over them with his Jeep.
Holly called from the cellular phone Sun. 2/18 at
1330 hours and reported that they had just left
the Mojave Road Mailbox and entered the
Mojave Road Web Site in the book. Mile marker
